Under the supervision of the Chief Therapist and the professional direction of a radiation oncologist, the radiation therapist performs various radiotherapy treatments and simulations at a technical level requiring minimal supervision of technical detail. The radiation therapist may be assigned to provide specific instruction to technology students, and may be required to assist in the development of new techniques for simulations and/or treatments, or in the use of new equipment.

Verify patient consent is documented
Prepare and position patients for simulation and treatment
Fabricates individualized treatment devices and performs simulation as prescribed by radiation oncologist.
Create and manage simulation and verification images
Document procedural timeout
Perform daily warm up on all treatment and simulation equipment
Safely deliver the treatment as directed and prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist
Keep accurate records of the treatment of each patient
Observe radiation safety and protection procedures
Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self and others
Monitor the patient visually and audibly during treatment
Involvement with treatment planning, which includes the exact location of the tumor and optimal technique for treatment
Achieves precision patient alignment using imaging and external markings, maintaining patient markings during treatment
Review the isodose plan and treatment prescription prior to implementation. Verifies the treatment plan is consistent with the prescription and can be accurately implemented in the treatment room.
Collaborates with radiation oncologists, medical physicists and medical dosimetrists to compensate for treatment inaccuracies; and reports deviations from the standard or planned treatment
Checks equipment for malfunctions/abnormal quality assurance readings and report any abnormal findings to appropriate personnel (chief radiation therapist, medical physicist, machine engineer).
Helps patients to understand the potential side effects of radiation treatment and how to manage any associated side effects.
Provides explanation and instruction to patients and family regarding radiation therapy procedures
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:
Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
Working knowledge of medical terminology
Knowledge of the human anatomy and proper positioning of the patient to provide treatment as prescribed.
Working knowledge of procedures employed with Radiation Hazards, Material Safety Data Sheets and their application
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, physicians, technologists, support personnel and other employees
Knowledge in principles, practices and procedures involved in the operation of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment.
Organized; sets priorities, and able to multi-task
